The Rollei 35. Small Full-Frame 35mm Camera in its Day.

The Rollei 35, a small full-frame 35mm camera in its day; is a remarkable manual focus, mechanical camera that fits in the palm of your hand easily. And the battery you can insert if you wish or should it die is just for the basic exposure meter you can use to try and get that perfect exposure. Confession and the Northern Lights

Recently, last week Friday evening, I had the opportunity to photograph the northern lights, from my home, in central Arizona! A very rare occasion, especially in our neck of the woods. The camera I had used was the Panasonic Lumix S5II w/ the Lumix S 1:3.5-5.6/20-60mm lens. Having said that, I realized to do this, I would break my personal goal of only photographing in monochrome. I hope you e...

    Good evening! As a former AZ guy (from Dragoon), I always enjoy seeing what I’m missing!!! I have the Elmar 50mm f/2.8 (1961 model) on my 1962 Leica M2, and I love it! It compares favorably to my Elmar 5cm f/3.5 and my Summitar 5cm f/2 that I use on my IIIf and IIIg - so much so that I am considering the LTM version of the 50mm f/2.8 for the Barnacks! Very sharp lens for comparatively little money!!!😊

    I bought my X-700 in 1982 and used it continually until 2000, at which point I upgraded to a Mamiya 7 medium format rangefinder. It was and remains faultless. No problems with the electronics. I’ll need to check the lightseals as I haven’t used it for a couple of years. I recommend getting the 28-85mm zoom and, if you don’t already have it, the 50mm f1.7 kit lens. They served me well from travel to portraiture. Great camera and easy to use.

    Hi Chuck and thanks for your video. I had for two years an SL type 601 (the first one of the actual line) second hand I paid 2'200 USD, and loved it. The only time it fell in my wooden floor a couple of months ago, the battery got stuck. Sent it to Wetzlar (I live in Switzerland) to ask a repair... a month later they answered. They ask 2'890 USD... I considered buying an SL2-S... but now I hesitate, the cost is out of my budget even though I have a beautiful opportunity waiting for me. :-((

      @@ChuckAbles Thanks Chuck for taking time to answer... I also have a Pentax K1-Mk2 and some Limited lens. Nice, beautiful pictures, but then I recently got an Olympus M1X second hand practically new for a 1/4 price... Was surprised by the fun one gets with these incredibly versatile instruments, and the quality. This thing against M43 is exaggerated. It's much better than what I thought. Would I go deeper in the system, I don't know...But I can't put words to the Leica Experience... a unique thing that goes beyond reason... and my wallet. So I'm in a stand by with a Leica SL2-S... second hand in the Geneva Leica Shop...You gave me a great idea with your bottom plate. It also serves as a security or protection for the camera. The electrical issue with these X-700 cameras is due to the two main capacitors drying out over the years. The capacitors are “pretty simple” to replace .. the one just under the bottom plate (the one that goes out most often) is a quick job, just clipping out the old and soldering in the new, but the other one at the top of the camera body is a bit more tricky. Replacement capacitors are readily available on-line from several sources. I really like my Minolta X-700 cameras, but personally like the X-570 more as their capacitors don’t usually have nearly the same issue. Thanks for sharing!

      Great question. Because I'm using a 4x5 Titan pinhole camera and have to time the exposure myself after removing the cap and then putting it back on I found the Kodak TMax 100 works fine. And the Ilford Delta100 as well. Pretty much depends on what you are envisioning and what you can do. As an example, I use b&w film because I develop it using Caffenol (instant coffee recipe). Good luck on your photographic adventure.

    I had a similar issue with my Zorki with the tightness when advancing the film. I too lost a few photos but considering the actual cost of the camera as well as age, I can live with it. I recently purchased a Fed 2 online. I am testing it now but have noticed that the viewfinder seems to be off horizontally. I have used another Fed 2 and noticed something similar. It is easy to live with, but worth mentioning.

    Very nice. I built a few quick pinhole cameras for my grandkids with tall drink cans and a Quaker Oats cardboard container and we used direct positive photo paper, so no developing was needed. A scan and inversion on the computer did the trick. I have a fancy Zero Image pinhole camera that results in much sharper images, but that’s because the 3 holes are precision cut to exact sizes of 0.18mm, 0.28mm & 0.35mm for effective apertures of f/138, f/176 & f/236.5 respectively. The clean cut of the hole makes for sharper images, but pinhole photos are always a bit soft.

    • @ChuckAbles
      @ChuckAbles 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for sharing your experiences and appreciate it very much. I was and still, considering the Zero 4x5 Pinhole Camera System and for that reason of having the three different pinhole sizes to work with. Not only that, but it does also look beautiful too. However, having never worked with direct positive photo paper, you peaked my interested in this 'no developing was needed.' Is there reference materials or sites I can visit. I'm curious, because everything I've read lead me to believe it still has to be developed in some way.

    Is there any relationship between the size of the pinhole and the sharpness of the image?

    • @ChuckAbles
      @ChuckAbles 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the question. I did give it some thought, and I'm going to hazard a guess there is. I knew giving the diameter of the hole and the small tea tin size it could be an issue. I think it's the focal length with the math. Having said that, I'm considering building a 4X5, but this time, I use the pinhole diameter to build a camera around it, calculating f/stop, focal length, and angle of light into the camera. As well as reading up more on the subject.

      A pro version will use a laser to cut the hole, its not just the size but also the cleanest of the hole. You can check it with a loupe after sanding.

      Indeed, if you go to mrpinhole website, you can calculate the optimal pinhole size for a particular focal length. I'll also advice buying some laser drilled pinhole plates, they are quite cheap. Just Google for options. With this small adjustment, the difference in image quality is very noticeable. Good luck!

    Awesome camera: "That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." happy pinhole day !!! I use the app called Pinhole Designer. Today it was raining so I did my first cyanotype print. 1 hour exposure. UV level 1

    I have one of these and have discovered that if the film is not advanced all the way when you fire the shutter (if you "short stroke" the film advance), that excess will get added to the next film advance. Even if you only wind it 1% and hit the shutter (the shutter wont actually open), it requires the film to be advanced the remaining 99%, and then another 100% before the shutter is fully cocked again. Say for instance, you take a picture and continue walking. During that walk the film advance knob moves less than a millimeter (I've tested it), and you go to take another shot. You bring the camera up and hit the shutter- nothing happens because you forgot to advance the film. By hitting the shutter, the pin to cock the shutter moves to the wrong position and needs to go all the way around to it's starting position before it can begin cocking the shutter, resulting in the film skipping a shot. Soviet idiosyncrasies, what're you gonna do. Best way to prevent this is to just check the film advance knob before taking a picture to make sure it is wound all the way. At least that's one explanation as to what could be happening to your camera.

    Nice video on this Leica lens. Have this lens for my Leica M3 and love how it performs. This lens and camera ‘force’ us to slow down and compose our work vs. cameras run w/ a microchip. Can understand how your Leica club in Prescott feels about the Leica brand. This is one of the oldest and finest camera/optical companies in the world. Leica is the one brand where users can send their 50 year old camera to Wetzlar, Germany with a check for 600 Euros and Leica will overhaul the camera to its original specs. Nice of you to post this. ❤❤

    Try this: When rewinding your film in the camera, stop rewinding when the film releases from the take-up reel. This will leave a leader outside the film canister. Square off the leader with scissors. From here, you can start the film on your tank spool in the light and get the film past the ball bearings. In the changing bag, pull the film from the canister as you ratchet the film on the Patterson reel. When you reach the end of the roll of film, you'll need scissors in the changing bag to cut the film from the canister. Been doing it this way for years. Saves time and stress in the changing bag.

      Good gosh almighty, that sounds so sinfully simple. I'll give it a try next time I develop a roll of 35mm. Appreciate the suggestion. Thanks.
